Work-based Learning


Work-based learning - "learning opportunities that occur in part or in whole in the workplace and provide the learner with hands-on, real world experience. Work-based learning opportunities include but are not limited to: internships, apprenticeships, and residencies and incumbent worker training." Colorado Workforce Development Council Glossary

Career Presentations

Industry Speakers

Industry Speaker Icon"Industry partners who present at school sites or in classrooms, with a group of students. Informational Interviews

Informational Interview"Interviews in which students or workers who are considering their career options meet with representatives of employers outside of the formal job application process.

Worksite Tours

Worksite Tour"A field trip is an opportunity for a class to leave the classroom to see class-related experiences away from the school campus. This short-term visit to a business or agency expands the learning opportunities for participating students. The field trip allows students to observe and investigate activities related to a specific subject and career development objective. Learning Through Work

Clinical Experiences

Clinicals Icon"One of the more critical experiences for healthcare science students is exposure to patients in a clinical setting. Credit-for-work Experiences

Credit for work icon"Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) means credit for work experience, and Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), refers to the assessments required to approve the work place learning for credit. CPL and PLA are distinctly different from transfer or applied credit, which recognizes and allows a student to apply relevant college course credit from a different school or earlier course work to a student's credential requirements." Colorado Workforce Development Council Glossary

Internships

Internship Icon"An opportunity in real world environments for exposure to the requirements of a particular occupation or industry, the work environment and the behavioral expectations for success on the job. Pre-Apprenticeship

Pre-apprenticeship Icon"Services and programs, often including classroom instruction, designed to prepare individuals to enter and succeed in Registered Apprenticeship programs. Learning At Work

Apprenticeship

Additional Jeffco WBL Opportunities

Career Explore

Career Explore is a program designed from the Colorado’s Work-Based Learning Continuum to provide options for students to become re-engaged learners through:

Opportunities for students to identify and explore career pathways of interest, obtain industry specific training, certificates, and baseline certifications.
Offering opportunities for students to demonstrate core-content knowledge through course alignment of standards and competencies to earn credits toward graduation.
• Offering students Jeffco Generation Skills (essential skills) through instruction, observation, and student demonstration of skills through authentic activities (classwork, trainings, volunteer work, and internships).
• An option for students to earn work-based learning experience in a career pathway (through volunteer work and internships) to help support their postsecondary opportunities.

Career and Technical Education

Jeffco Public Schools is dedicated to preparing all students for careers and lifelong learning. Our mission is to prepare all students for successful careers through the real-world application of core academic skills by partnering classrooms with businesses, industries, and communities which positively impacts the future workforce.

Jeffco has Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs in neighborhood middle schools and high schools as well as our premier career and technical schools, Warren Tech and Warren Tech North.

All CTE programs offer academic, elective, and/or college credit.

CareerWise

"CareerWise modern youth apprentices split their time between their traditional high school classroom and the workplace. They earn a wage while receiving hands-on work experience where they can apply their classroom learning. By the conclusion of the program, students will have:

  • meaningful work experience
  • a nationally recognized industry certification
  • a professional network
  • the opportunity to earn debt-free college credit"
    CareerWise Colorado

Executive High School Internship Program

"The Executive High School Internship Program is a competitive program offered to high academic high school seniors (unweighted GPA of 3.5 or greater). Students apply the second semester of their junior year to be accepted into the program for their senior year. This program gives the participant an opportunity to see what is necessary to be successful in the career field of their choosing. They complete the program in one semester (summer is an option). They learn weekly online about workplace readiness skills such as priorities, resume writing, interview skills, LinkedIn, and being successful in the workplace. They also complete a 100 hour non-paid internship in the field they choose. They are eligible for 7 free concurrent enrollment college credits once they complete the Workplace Readiness Course and 100 hour internship." Executive High School Intership Program
