Low Cost Home Internet Options

Tech for Ed Low Cost Home InternetWe know that the "digital divide" between low income and more affluent students is a real and significant issue that needs to be addressed as Jeffco Public Schools moves forward with a district-level 1:1 program.

The Chromebooks being used by the majority of our schools have an offline option where students will be able to work on Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides without an internet connection. Learn more about how to work in offline mode.


Coronavirus Options

  • Xfinity has announced an Xfinity WiFi Free For Everyone program. Through it, Xfinity hotspots across the country will be available to anyone who needs them for free. Search for a hotspot near you.

  • Comcast Internet Essentials is offering two free months of their Internet Essentials package starting March 16, 2020. You have to be eligible, so read more on their website. You can also call 1-855-846-8376.

  • AT&T is opening up their public WiFi hotspots for anyone to use for free. 

  • Sprint is providing unlimited data for 60 days to customers with metered data plans and giving 20 GB of free mobile hotspot to customers with hotspot-capable devices.

  • T-Mobile is allowing all customers on limited data T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile plan unlimited data for the next 60 days; adding 10 GB of mobile hotspot each month for the next two months for T-Mobile postpaid and Metro customers on smartphone plans; and giving Lifeline partners extra free LTE data each month.

Low-Cost Internet Options

In addition to these free options, we have identified a few low-cost internet options that families might choose to pursue. These are:

  • Comcast: Comcast offers a package called Internet Essentials for low income families for $9.95/month. There is an application process to verify eligibility. Comcast also offers an option to purchase a low-cost computer for $149.95 for families enrolled in their Internet Essentials program.

  • PCs for People: PCs for People offers high speed 4G LTE internet service for as low as $11.25/month. Plans are prepaid; there is an application process to verify eligibility. PCs for People also offers low-cost computers for eligible individuals and families.


Mobile Internet Options

Finally, many cell phone service providers offer the option to have your phone act as a "hot spot" for internet access. You would need to contact your cell phone service provider for more information about availability and cost for this option.
