Board of Education Approves Agreement with JCEA

Board of Education Approves Agreement with JCEA
Posted on 10/06/2020

At their regular meeting on October 1, the Jeffco Public Schools Board of Education unanimously voted in favor of the compensation agreement with the Jefferson County Education Association (JCEA). The district and JCEA finished the terms of the agreement on September 21. JCEA membership voted on the negotiated agreement, and the favorable Board vote was the final step in the process.

The District and JCEA recognize that hiring and retaining qualified, experienced educators is critical to both parties, and offering competitive compensation is an important contributor toward accomplishing this goal. In addition, the parties recognize the critical nature of school finance and Jeffco Public Schools finance during the COVID-19 pandemic, and impacts on this year’s budget and finances.

The compensation agreement is a 3% salary payment (paid in two 1.5% installments) from one-time money in the District reserves. In addition, lane changes for employees will be honored retroactive to the first paycheck of the school year, and are based on existing language in the collective bargaining agreement regarding degrees and credit hours. The teams will return to the bargaining table if there is a significant change, positive or negative, to district revenue in the current fiscal year. Also included in this year's agreement is the development of a sick leave bank and language updates to areas covering grievance, educator assignments and class sizes, student discipline, summer school pay rates, and benefits coverage.

"After many long sessions, we are pleased to have reached agreement with our partners at the Jefferson County Educators Association and their members," shares Interim Superintendent Kristopher Schuh. "Many of the items discussed this session - class size planning and collaboration, student behavior, teacher rights around discipline - directly impact the success of teachers and ultimately students. Our teams are very proud of the positive changes we made this year."
