Swanson ElementaryFun with Flags indeed! On May 10, Swanson Elementary celebrated the completion of a very special project. They took a school-wide field trip to their new neighborhood park, Britton Park, to raise a flag they made! Approached a few months ago by the Britton Park Neighborhood Committee, 5th and 6th graders were challenged to create a flag to fly over the park during special events. Students worked in teams to research the history of Arvada, Colorado and Britton Park, explore the symbolism and history of flags, then design their flag. Groups presented their process and decision-making, and collaborated with a graphic designer from the Custom Flag Company to ensure designs were viable, symbolically appropriate, and eye-catching.

A group of teachers, staff, and Custom Flag Company employees used rubrics to judge the designs and select finalists. Finalists then presented to another panel of judges, which included members of the Britton Park Association and a representative from the City of Arvada, who determined the winning design.

After all the students’ hard work, the Custom Flag Company produced the flag, which today made its debut at the park! After the ceremony, the whole school spent time at the park playing Duck, Duck, Goose and Red Light, Green Light and enjoyed lunch in their beautiful, new community park.
