Jeffco's 21st Century Virtual Academy Offers Engaging Online Option for Students

JVA studentsJeffco Public School's 21st Century Virtual Academy (JVA) is an option school with many exciting and engaging online course offerings available to all Jeffco students at no cost. JVA’s courses are aligned with Jeffco’s curriculum and are offered through Schoology. JVA’s teachers are experts in online instruction and course development. The school follows the district school calendar and all policies. However, students have control over the time, pace, place, and often, the path of their learning because courses are available 24 hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. Flexibility is a big draw for JVA students and families along with small class sizes for on-campus days. JVA also offers monthly social activities and clubs driven by student requests. JVA has the right program to fit a variety of needs: middle school, traditional high school, and Targeted Actions for Graduation (TAG).

Full-time middle school students (grades 6-8) meet one day a week on campus to engage with their teachers, gaining real-world learning experiences and making social connections with peers. The other four days of the week, students work off-campus in Schoology on their courses while connecting virtually with their teachers and classmates as needed.

Full-time high school students (grades 9-12) have the option to meet teachers on campus one day a week to get study help and work the other four days remotely. Most students work all five days remotely. Teachers are available for virtual help on all remote days and students can connect virtually with classmates as well.

Part-time middle and high school students do not come to campus because they attend their brick and mortar school, but do regularly engage with their teachers and classmates virtually.

Students in the TAG program (grades 11 and 12) meet one day a week on campus to engage with their teachers and peers and the other four days students work remotely. Teachers are available for virtual help on remote days.

Along with our traditional courses, JVA now offers online concurrent enrollment with Red Rocks Community College for English 121/122 and Math 121/122. JVA teachers are working as adjuncts with Red Rocks and teaching these entirely online classes. All students in grades 9-12 are eligible if they meet the entrance requirements. These classes offer guaranteed transferable college credit and Jeffco credit with free college tuition; any textbook or other materials costs are covered by the student. The tuition savings for a student taking a three-credit-hour college course at Red Rocks is $433.65. This is a great way for students to earn guaranteed college credit and save money in the process, while also earning Jeffco credits toward graduation.

JVA is also offering new courses for 2018-19: German I, Sociology, American Studies History, and English (a combined Modern U.S. History and English 10 class), and Spanish IV.

To learn more about JVA and course offerings, visit the school website or call the main office, 303-982-6700. Applications for 2018-19 are open now for all programs and will close when we fill all available spots in classes.
